![]() They even change names: Nikki becomes Victoria Luck, Kenny becomes Kendall and Jayni becomes Lola Rose. With the lottery winnings in hand, they travel to London in hopes of starting a new life. Seeing this as the last straw, Nikki gathers her things and tells the kids they’re running away. But after drinking too much, he hits Nikki over something petty and then attacks Jayni when she tries standing up to him. One day, Jayni gets the surprise that her mother has won the lottery. ![]() The family lives in constant fear of Jay because he’s a rageaholic and unpredictably violent – he’s even put his wife in hospital several times. It’s the story of Jayni, a young girl who lives with her brother (Kenny), mother (Nikki) and father (Jay). Eventually, I decided to go with ‘Lola Rose’, since it handles not one, but two real-world issues – which few other authors dare to attempt. And for while, I couldn’t decide which one to choose from the collection I have. Enjoy.Įver since finishing my review of ‘Lily Alone’, I’ve been eager to read another Jacqueline Wilson book. ![]()

![]() ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Dark secrets and dangerous exploits swirl around the pursuit of the beast, and Ishmael must do his best to survive-if he can. But there may be more to Captain Ahab’s obsession. It’s rumored that the ship’s captain, Ahab, lost his leg to the beast years ago, and that he’s now consumed by revenge. Even though easy prey abounds, time and again the chase boat crews are ordered to ignore it in order to pursue the elusive Great Terrafin. He’s here to work, risking his life to hunt down great ocean-dwelling beasts to harvest and send back to the resource-depleted Earth. But Ishmael isn’t on Cretacea to marvel at the fresh air, sunshine, and endless blue ocean. When seventeen-year-old Ishmael wakes up from stasis aboard the Pequod, he is amazed by how different this planet is from the dirty, dying, Shroud-covered Earth he left behind. And Faulkner takes it to a whole new level. I don't mind working at a book if it's hard-going, but this style of narration makes it difficult for me, personally, to ever settle into the rhythm of the book. The first problem is my lack of enthusiasm for stream of consciousness narratives. I think, deep down, I always sensed Faulkner just wasn't for me. But when I've felt in the mood for a classic or something "literary", I've always passed him up for other authors, even those with 1000+ page monsters. His books always appear on lists of "best books of all time" and "books you should read before you die". I've been working up to a William Faulkner book for years. ![]() ![]() ![]() All I can surmise from reading Olivia is that the author has a big fat chip on her shoulder. Olivia is rude and stupid (no sense of self-preservation whatsoever). I see these characters being psychotic 18-year-olds. But no kid’s obviously got something to prove. They’re all the toughest of the tough guys, and he’s the toughest of them all! Yah. This is his town, these are his streets, he’s a “soldier” of the street.
